SINGAPORE: Their businesses may have been hit hard, their dance floors converted to pop-up restaurants and their karaoke rooms turned into work spaces, but operators of nightlife and entertainment businesses say that there remains hope for the industry amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

Dedicated spaces have long been crucial to LGBTQ+ people. Whether it’s with friends and chosen family, or partners and hook-ups, these places have created joy and belonging while providing care that isn’t always available elsewhere.

Many clubbers appreciate the pre-party-ritual of sticking something up their nose. This past weekend, that something was a swab, and it was all in the name in science.

Due to a lethal combo of sky-high rent, licensing laws and mince-heads who move above nightclubs and then complain about the noise, the UK venues where we have late-night fun have never been under more threat.

It’s been 14 months since the start of the pandemic, which means 14 months without nightclubs. Obviously, clubs aren’t exactly compatible with halting the spread of a dangerous virus, but that doesn’t mean we don’t miss them.

Streaming also has the potential of engaging communities that tend to be excluded from the physical experience. This includes those who live in remote areas, those who face access issues due to disabilities and others who favor sober spaces.
