Whether You’re On Land or Sea, Summer Calls for Nautical Fashion

Today, Miu Miu launched a maritime collection filled with pieces that nod to the nautical—dickie-style sailor collars, blue and white colorways, and, of course, many a stripe. Launching just in time for summer, this new collection speaks to the spirit of the times. Fashion is fantasy and as we begin to press “play” again on life and reemerge, there’s a palpable eagerness for an escape via plane, train, or perhaps a boat? And what could better communicate that sentiment than clothing rooted in the open seas? “Maritime speaks of the possibilities—the commencement of a journey. The coastline is not the end of the land, but rather marks the start of something new,” a press release from Miu Miu states.

And Miu Miu is not alone in their embrace of the nautical. Loro Piana’s spring 2021 loafers feature hand-braided sailor knots, and contemporary brand Usisi Sister designed a blue and white sweater complete with a Peter Pan collar to resemble sailing uniforms. Countless other designers, like Chloé and Comme des Garçons, have released their take on the marinière top, too.

Whether by land or by sea this summer, leaning into aesthetic codes like sailor stripes, collars, neckerchiefs, and crisp white and navy blue feels like a way to cast off the past year and welcome the exciting future ahead. Here, shop maritime-inspired wares to get excited for the warm months ahead, whether you’re in the city or by the sea.
